Innovation and Local Creativity: Lessons from the South about Social and Economic Applications of ICT

As it is becoming evident in relation to mobile phones, the ‘under-developed’ South is producing interesting and valuable applications of ICT for both social as well as economic purposes. When ICT applications and initiatives show good performance (in health, commerce, education, e-gov, etc.) in contexts with scarce resources, low technical capacity and/or unfavourable environmental conditions, the chances are, they might also work well in the richer North where conditions are better. Processes that deliberately bridge these ICT products/processes toward developed (donor) countries could generate a virtuous circle of innovation with multiple beneficiaries about ICT4D, and provide useful lessons learnt for all involved.

This block of Communications will feature examples of ICT-based successful experiences in the South which could be implemented or have already been adapted for donor countries, in any development area (education, health, e-gov, disaster management, etc.).
